End to employment program

Breakfast. ABC Radio National, 14 September 2007 Audio Streaming, MP3
For the last 30 years, Indigenous Australians in remote communities have had access to the Community Development Employment Program, better known as CDEP. It's a scheme which employs locals on community projects. This week the CDEP will end, as part of the federal government's intervention policy in the Northern Territory. The government says CDEPs are outdated and will be replaced by a national 'work for the dole' scheme.
Remote communities have grave fears about the change, as Madeleine Genner reports.
Guest: Professor Jon Altman, director of the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research (AEPR) at the ANU
